Aya Kominato (小湊 亜耶 Kominato Aya) is outgoing and spontaneous, Aya seems to be the only character without social problems. He is very open, caring, and sometimes even dense. He has an unrequited crush on Shuko Murao. Aya harbors a hatred for Tanaka-sensei, and initially did not like Kou Tanaka due to his relation to him. He is good at Math. He is the only one Kou has told about his romantic feelings for Futaba Yoshioka.

Appearance

Aya has light brown wavy hair with fairly dark brown eyes. He has a slender body, but seems to appear a little more built compared to Kou. He is usually seen wearing his school uniform. Otherwise, when outside of school, he usually wears casual pants with a t-shirt.

Personality

Aya is someone who is both cheerful and friendly. He is also somewhat playful and sneaky as Kou Tanaka stated that Aya bought some porn magazine at their first excursion. Kou describes Aya as a good person overall.

Background

Aya is actually one-quarter French, meaning that one his parents are half French. According to him, his parents were always busy so an old lady he nicknamed "Aunty" raised him and helped him when he was bullied because of his appearance. He also has one younger sister.

Plot

The one who raised Aya, whom he nicknamed "Auntie" recently passed away, Aya is visiting her funeral as soon as they go back to Tokyo. Aya now realize a bit more of what Kou Tanaka felt when his mother passed away.

Relationships

Shuko Murao

Shuko is one of Aya's friends and love interest. It appears that Aya knew Shuko before the rest of the group, considering he was always shown talking and following her around casually at the beginning of the series. Aya is very over protective of Shuko, especially when it comes to Tanaka-Sensai, who he knows Shuko likes. He gets very annoyed by Tanaka-Sensai's sarcastic responses to him. After Shuko decides to give up on Tanaka-Sensai, Aya takes any opportunity to show his cool points to her, despite that he is still faced with unrequited love. Eventually, his hard work pays off and the two become a couple which was to his surprise that his confession and Valentines Day chocolate was actually accepted by Shuko along with receiving his own chocolates from her.

Kou Mabuchi

He initially disliked Kou, because of his relation with Tanaka-sensei. But, their friendship grows when they were together with Futaba, Yuri and Shoko in the excursion. Aya is aware of Kou's past and his romantic feelings for Futaba. Aya supports Kou and Futaba together. Aya also values Kou as his friend, and seems to truly care for him.

Yoichi Tanaka

Aya is in-love with Shuko and shows his affections for her publicly. Aya is also aware that Shuko is in-love with Yoichi, and is quite aware of Yoichi's romantic feelings for Shuko, because of Yoichi's playful little hints. Yoichi enjoys a playful rivalry with Aya over Shuko. When Shuko says that she will let go of Yoichi, Yoichi tells Aya that he might be alright if Shuko ends up with a good guy like him.

Futaba Yoshioka

Aya and Futaba both have a cheerful personality and they seem to get along just fine because of their similarities in their personalities. Aya is aware of Kou's romantic affections for Futaba and always supports Kou to end up with Futaba.

Yuri Makita

Yuri didn't like Aya, because he unintentionally "stole" her cupcake during their excursion. They don't interact in the series very often, but now they are on good terms with each other.

• The name Aya means "second, Asia" (亜) (a) and "question mark" (耶) (ya).
  • Despite being male, the name Aya is commonly used by females in Japanese.
• Aya's surname Kominato means "small" (小) (ko) and "port, harbor" (湊) (minato).
