Yuri Makita (槙田 悠里 Makita Yūri) is a girl whose high school life is parallel to Futaba Yoshioka's middle school life whom she soon became friends with. Yuri gets by very well, however, for she prefers to be hated for who she truly is than to be liked for someone she isn't.

She develops a crush on Kou Tanaka after he helps her during a class leader's camp and she greatly treasures her friendship with Futaba, but she often gets jealous of Futaba's closeness with Kou. However, she eventually gets over her feelings for Kou and she is now going out with Haruhiko Uchimiya.

Appearance

Yuri is a very cute, adorable and petite pale-skinned girl (that makes her loved by all the guys, but hated by the girls in her class) with chin-length reddish-brown hair that has straight bangs hanging over her eyebrows, wide hazel eyes and she is known to be the epitome (a person or thing that is a perfect example of a particular quality or type) of a "sweet little girl". It hasn't been shown that she does much with her hair, except for during the festival she wore one side of hair pulled back by a flower accessory.

Personality

Yuri's personality is a very cute, cuddly and innocent girl that makes her loved by the guys but hated by the girls. Although she was alone at a period of time in her high school life, she accepted the fact that she's disliked where she first became close friends with Futaba Yoshioka, then Shuko Murao, Kou Tanaka and Aya Kominato and Yuri is loved by all of them. Yuri tends to keep a smile in front of people (even when she's feeling down), for instance she answered so casually and pretended to be fine when Yoshioka stated she also likes Kou (but ends up going into the bathroom and crying). No matter how much she cries over Yoshioka and Kou's relationship, she doesn't let anything ruin her and Yoshioka friendship. Yuri also respects people's secrets, if she knows something that someone holds of value, she keeps quiet. Yuri might be very kind hearted, but she still has a jealous streak and can get somewhat annoyed by Toma Kikuchi.

Relationships

Futaba Yoshioka

Yuri was Yoshioka's first real female friend in high school. Yuri found Yoshioka really nice and thanked her for talking to her, they became best friends after Yoshioka stood up for Yuri. Yuri also cherishes their friendship, but ended up falling for the same guy, Kou. She pretended not to be bothered by Yoshioka also liking Kou, but ended up crying about it (despite this, she still tried her best to win over Kou). She won't let anything come between their friendship, but Yuri can get jealous of Yoshioka and Kou's closeness (this provokes her in trying to get close to Kou). Unfortunately, Yuri loses to Yoshioka (but since Yoshioka is always caring about her, it's easy to forget about their little rivalry). Yuri still has some selfish thoughts about getting with Kou, but now is able to give advice to Yoshioka with her Kou problems and pushes her to move forward (due to the fact that Yuri no longer has a chance). Yuri can somtimes get really angry with Yoshioka for not following her heart and caring to much of others opinions.

Kou Mabuchi

Yuri first fell in love with Kou after he helped her get across the river during the field trip. She tries her best to learn more about Kou, and feels a little uneasy when Kou and Yoshioka are really close. Between Yoshioka and Yuri, she was the first one to see Kou's mother's memorial room. She kept quiet about knowing about the room (not only in respect to Kou, but also probably because she felt special that she knew something Yoshioka didn't). Yuri's "specialness" went away after Yoshioka also found out about the room, (Yuri can get discouraged easily, thinking she doesn't have a chance with Kou). Besides this she still gives it her all. Yuri really stepped up her game at the festival (she wore her yukata, and spent almost the whole day next to Kou), but still it was no use and it was evident to her that Kou is in love with Yoshioka and no matter what she does, she can never get with him. In order to move on, Yuri confesses to Kou and get's rejected with "Thank you, but I don't see you that way." Yuri has finally come to grips that the relationship she wants them to have is impossible. In result of this, Yuri has found a new love interest, Uchimiya and later started going out with him.

Shuko Murao

Shuko is one of Yuri's best friends. During the field trip, Yuri was wandering around and ended up seeing Shuko and Tanaka-sensei together. Since Shuuko and Tanaka-sensei's relationship is risky, Yuri kept quiet (and told Shuko that she won't tell anyone, and that it would be okay for her to also tell Yoshioka). Like Yoshioka, Yuri also supports Shuko's relationship with Tanaka-sensei. Shuko also gave Yuri advice on trying harder with Kou and Yuri also is always there to comfort Shuko.

Haruhiko Uchimiya

Uchimiya (or Ucchi) is one of Toma's friends that is seen hanging around him many times. It is hinted that he and Yuri are both interested in each other and they eventually start dating later on. Although their relationship isn't touched on a lot in the series, they are a happy couple who expressed that they really love each other.

Toma Kikuchi

Yuri was very bothered by Toma in the beginning due to the fact that he kept on trying to get with Yoshioka. Later on, after Toma's friend tells Yuri that she should give Toma a chance (because he's a really good guy) and she lightened up towards him.

Aya Kominato

Yuri didn't like Aya because he unintentionally "stole" her cupcake during their excursion. They don't interact in the series very often, but they are now on good terms with each other.

Etymology

• The name Yuri means "permanence" (悠) (yu) and "village" (里) (ri).
  • Permanence means the state or quality of lasting or remaining unchanged indefinitely.
• Yuri's surname Makita means "twig, ornamental evergreen" (槙) (maki) and "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta).
